Karuppampatti is an Indian Tamil-language film directed by newcomer Tha. Prabhu Raja Cholan, a former associate of S. Shankar. It stars Ajmal, alongside Aparnaa Bajpai and Archana in lead roles.[1] The film was released in 22 March 2013.

In February 2010, Tha. Prabhu Raja Cholan, a former associate of director Shankar, announced that he would make a film titled Karuppampatti, which would be produced by Sundar, have cinematography by P. G. Muthaiah and music by D. Imaan.[2] However before production, the team was changed and it was announced that Santhosh Sriram[3] would be the cinematographer and Kannan of Tamil Padam fame would be the music composer. The producer of the film approached Hindi actress Sonam Kapoor to play the lead role in the film, but were unsuccessful in convincing her to debut in Tamil films with this venture.[4] Hence Aparnaa Bajpai, who had made her debut in Sasikumar's Easan, was signed on to play the leading female role in the film.[5] The shooting of the film began in May 2010 and posters featuring Ajmal with the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, walking in snow, and studying in a university classroom abroad were released. It was also reported that Ajmal plays a dual role as father and son and that the film will be set in two backdrops that of a village and the city, with the director remarking the film would show a person's journey through life from Karuppampatti village near Trichy to Paris, France.[6][7] A song titled "Oh Indira" was shot with Ajmal and Archana in May 2010 at AVM Studios, Chennai with a 1970s bar set out up.[8]
The team shot a schedule in Pazhani in December 2010 and then returned in August 2011, when Ajmal refused to engage in a scene where there is a kiss sequence with Aparnaa Bajpai and eventually ended up kissing her on the cheek instead.[9] The final portions of the film were canned in Paris, France and in Valsassina and Lecco, Italy in February 2012 where scenes featuring Ajmal and Italian model Alice Tantardini were canned.[10][11] In April 2012, it was announced that Bappi Lahiri would sing a song for the film titled "Naughty Raja Raja" and the team audaciously attempted to bring in international pop star Katy Perry to feature in the music video.[12][13][14] To make most of use of Ajmal's popularity in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries, the director confirmed that the film would be dubbed and released in the latter two languages.[15] Ajmal also completed his dubbing for the film in French after taking lessons in the language to ensure his voice remains constant in the film.

Sundaattam is a simple story plotted based on indoor game Caroms. Prabhakaran (Irfan) is a brilliant carom player who defeats Kasi (Madhu) and wins applause and friendship of Bhagya Annachi (Naren) who is local carom club owner. Prabhakaran also falls in love with his friend’s sister Arundati (Arundhati) who is a volatile suspended police. Now Kasi want to take revenge for his defeat and decides to kill Prabhakaran.

Performances

Irfan is energetic in the film. He carried off the film on his shoulders right from the word go and his act takes him to another level. His action sequences are brilliantly captured.

Arundati is simple yet beautiful and her screentime with Irfan had worked well.

Technical Analysis

Britto’s soundtrack En Uyir Thozhan's Raasathi...has lost its pace in the movie. While dialogues are very impressive with good punch liners with pleasing visuals. Screenplay is predictable, editing isn’t smooth, and Action choreography is brilliant. Production values are lavish. Director Brahma gets the entire credits for plotting such simple story with amazing action sequence and a cute love story.

Kishore plays the role of Veerappan in the film, which also features Arjun and Vijayalakshmi in the lead. It is made as a bilingual, being simultaneously shot in Kannada as Attahasa. The movie released on 14th February 2013 with good & positive reviews

In March 2011, A. M. R. Ramesh confirmed that his next directorial would be based on Veerappan and that he had completed the scriptment,[5] while adding that Kishore had already agreed to play the lead role of Veerappan. Ramesh had been researching on Veerappan for 10 years and had spoken with several key people who were associated with him or involved in various incidents.[6] Ramesh clarified that he would just present the real happenings, without taking any sides.[7] Arjun bagged the role of the chief Special Task Force officer Vijayakumar.[6] Initial reports claimed that Bollywood actress Rani Mukherji was considered for the role of Veerappan's wife, Muthulakshmi.[3] Sources in July 2011 reported that Priyamani and Jayachitra were signed on to portray Muthulakshmi and the role of Chief Minister Jayalalitha, respectively.[2] Priyamani denied being part of the project, adding that she was not offered the role.[8] Subsequently, Vijayalakshmi was finalized for the role.[7] Although Ramesh wanted Akkineni Nageswara Rao to play Kannada actor Rajkumar,[6] who was kidnapped by Veerappan, Suresh Oberoi was eventually roped in,[3] while Sulakshana would play his wife Parvathamma.[9] Divya Spandana was initially supposed to enact the role of a journalist,[10] however the actress too dismissed the reports,[11] following which Nikita Thukral was approached for the role.[12] Lakshmi Rai then confirmed that she was offered the role.[13] Bhavana Rao, known under her stage name Shikha in Tamil cinema, revealed that she was playing a character called Chandhini, who was considered as "Veerappan's right-hand".[14] Former Asst Director Nagappa Maradagi, who also was abducted by Veerappan, and Shivakumar Mugilan, who was part of Veerappan's gang, were involved in the making of the film
